American college made 100mm graphene wafer THz chip

Due to the physical limitations of silicon chips, the argument that Moore's Law is coming to an end in recent years is constantly emerging. There are many materials that can replace silicon to make next-generation processor chips, and graphene is one of them. Pennsylvania State University has announced that they have successfully produced 100mm (4 inches) pure graphene wafers.

Graphene is a special form of graphite. It is a two-dimensional structure composed of honeycombed single-layer carbon atoms. Therefore, it is also called single-layer graphite. It can also be considered as graphene rolled into a barrel. Graphene has unique physical, chemical and structural properties. It is particularly noteworthy that electrons can operate at ultra-high speeds of 1/300 in the graphene structure and are therefore considered ideal materials for the next generation of chips. Processor frequencies made with graphene are expected to reach above 1 THz, which is 100 to 1000 times that of current silicon chips.

The world's largest graphene wafer was 50mm, and the 100mm graphene wafer produced by Penn State University is the largest in the world. In manufacturing, they used silicon sublimation technology to remove all of the silicon in the silicon carbide wafer, leaving only the graphene structure of carbon atoms.

The wafer contains FET components composed of graphene, and researchers will test its performance in the near future. Next, they also plan to improve the structure and increase the speed of electrons in graphene, which is close to the theoretical limit of 1/300 light speed.
