Bearing grinding processing knowledge: the secret to successfully dressing the grinding wheel

The key factors that can maximize the grinding performance of the grinding wheel are good shaping and sharpening (commonly known as trimming) tools and skilled finishing techniques. In fact, an operator with high-quality dressing tools and skill in dressing the wheel can always maintain the grinding wheel with high grinding performance. Instead of relying solely on the purchase of so-called good grinding wheels. This is very important because the shop cannot be equipped with a special grinding wheel for each person's operation.

Sharpening is a process of sharpening the abrasive grains of a super-hard abrasive wheel. In this process, it is necessary to remove the binder between the abrasive grains and the blunt abrasive wheel abrasive grains, so that the abrasive grains having strong grinding performance protrude from the bonding agent to form a sharp cutting edge. The sharpening must also remove tiny materials from the pores on the surface of the grinding wheel to prevent the grinding force acting on the grinding wheel from increasing, and the grinding force on the grinding wheel is increased, which will cause vibration and cause burns on the surface of the part.

Without proper sharpening, even the best grinding wheels are not likely to achieve high quality and dimensional consistency of the machined parts. In fact, when you invest in high-quality grinding wheels, it is very important to trim them well in order to achieve high grinding performance.

Shaping can be said to be part of the preparation of the grinding wheel, which is carried out simultaneously with the sharpening of the ordinary grinding wheel. For super-abrasive grinding wheels, the two processes are carried out separately, first shaping the grinding wheel. In the grinding with superabrasive grinding wheels, the shaping is carried out using a shaping tool or a roller. The sharpening is often a trimming rod using a ceramic bond. After the shaping is completed, the grinding wheel is sharpened.

Before the grinding wheel includes shaping and sharpening, it is important to ensure that the spindle bearing is at a certain temperature (such as the normal grinding state of the grinding wheel). This avoids damage to the part geometry and abnormal wear of the grinding wheel and dressing tool. Tools for dressing must be handled with care because they are generally made of hard, wear-resistant but brittle diamond material and are very sensitive to minor impacts, microcracks and breakage caused by forces.

Because the diamond shaper itself is a tool, it needs to be very sharp. Using a blunt trimming tool to trim the surface of the wheel will blunt the wheel. In order to maintain a high quality and sharp diamond dressing tool, it is necessary to rotate a single point or a tapered tip dressing tool at 1/8 turn at regular intervals. The number of rotations can be determined according to the trimming situation, and according to experience, it is rotated at least once a day. For chisel heads and shaped dressing tools, it is generally necessary to rotate 180° before they are blunt.

Most cylindrical grinders place parts and wheels on a horizontal line. The highest point of the outer circle of the part and the highest point of the outer circle of the grinding wheel are called the part/grinding wheel contact point, and the diamond dressing tool should trim the grinding wheel as close as possible to the contact point of the part/grinding wheel. For grinding wheels for internal grinding machines, it is even more important to trim the diamond dressing tool near the highest point of the outer circle of the grinding wheel (ie, the part/wheel contact point at the time of grinding).

Micro-trimming
In order to reduce the dressing time, there seems to be a temptation to choose a larger depth of repair. This is a very wrong idea. The grinding wheel must be trimmed with the most appropriate dressing depth. Choosing too large a repair depth will result in high cutting temperatures, reduced dresser life, and a useful wheel layer. The end result is damage to both the dresser and the grinding wheel, which is counterproductive.

The optimum dressing amount is that after several repairs, it can restore the geometry of the grinding wheel and just produce a good grinding edge.

With a single-point dressing tool, the diameter of the grinding wheel should be contacted with a 10-15o axial inclination angle. This will cause the single-point dressing tool to produce a sharpening effect when it is rotated periodically. A dressing tool with multiple points of contact does not need to tilt this angle. Instead, use the entire end face of the dressing tool to make contact with the surface of the grinding wheel.
