Rom's lithium-ion battery monitoring IC consumes the lowest current in the industry

Rom announced on June 22, 2015 that it has developed a ML5233 monitoring IC for lithium-ion secondary batteries that consumes only 25μA (nominal) current during operation, and has begun sampling. The company claims that this current consumption is “the lowest in the industry” and consumes only 0.1 μA (nominal) current during Power Down, which is also the lowest in the industry. Therefore, even when the battery pack is stored for a long period of time, the decrease in the battery capacity can be significantly suppressed. This product can be used in battery packs made up of 10 battery cells in series, which can meet the needs of wireless cleaners and power tools.

In addition to the battery monitoring function, the IC incorporates a temperature detection circuit and a short-circuit current detection circuit. Therefore, over-charge detection, over-discharge detection, over-current detection, abnormal temperature detection during charge and discharge, and short-circuit detection of the battery pack can be performed without using an external MCU. In addition, since the number of parts can be reduced from the original four (battery monitor IC, temperature detection circuit, current detection circuit, MCU) to one, the printed circuit board package area can also be reduced by about 20%. The voltage detection error of each battery cell constituting the battery pack is reduced from ±50 mV (maximum) of Roma's previous product to ±15 mV (maximum). Therefore, the charging efficiency can be increased by up to 7%. The charge-discharge current detection error (measured with a shunt resistor) is ±10mV (max), and the short-circuit current detection error is ±15mV (max). In addition, a driver circuit for driving an external n-channel MOSFET for charge control is integrated.

Multiple such ICs are connected in multiple stages and can also be used when more than 10 battery cells are directly connected. The power supply voltage is +5 to 60V. The package uses a 32-pin LQFP (leaded terminal) with a mounting area of 9mm x 9mm. Operating temperature range is -40 to +85°C. Sample price is 800 yen (excluding tax). It will begin mass production on a scale of 50,000 per month starting from September 2015. (Special Contributor: Yamashita is better than himself)
