Scientists use E. coli to synthesize fuel substances

The reporter learned from Duke University in the United States that Dr. Zhixia Ye of the Mike Lynch Laboratory of the school had successfully used E. coli and biosynthetic biology to successfully transform E. coli and quickly selected high-throughput strains that could have industrial applications. It is reported that this strain can effectively produce products that can be used for food addition, synthetic polymer and fuel oil, and its effective application will gradually replace traditional chemical engineering, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and improve environmental quality.

According to Dr Ye, the technology is based on two-stage bioprocess, which is divided into E. coli growth and product production, using CRISPRi and controlled proteolysis techniques. E. coli is transferred from the growth stage to the product output stage, successfully guiding the E. coli material and energy for production rather than E. coli's own growth or by-product output, thereby increasing the yield and yield of the final small molecule product. E. coli, which uses sugar as its energy source, effectively produces a variety of strains with industrial applications.

At this stage, strains are mainly concentrated on the production of amino acids, alcohols and terpenes. These substances can be used for food additives, synthetic polymers and fuel oils. Since these substances rely mainly on traditional chemical processes at the present stage, the realization of this technology means that the application of E. coli as a bio-engineering project can gradually reduce the dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels and achieve sustainable development in the future.
