What does a biosensor know about its own senses? 【full text】

Technology Trends The academic community has long been studying how video and audio affect our brain and body. At present, this research not only occurs in university laboratories, Dolby's laboratories have conducted their own internal research, namely how the media triggers human reactions. The recent Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco spent a lot of time demonstrating the latest developments in its proprietary High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology.

What does a biosensor know about its own senses?

In a temporary soundproof living room, a woman sits on a leather sofa wearing a 64-channel EEG cap, a biomedical cap that is commonly used to measure the electrical activity of brain neurons. On her wrist is a tracker that measures heart rate and skin electrical response. Her fingertips also have a pulse oximeter with a thermal imaging camera in her room and she is also watching her skin temperature changes.
Dolby Laboratories chief scientist PoppyCrum said that Dolby is trying to better understand the video and audio experience of humans. The company began researching human physiological responses to video and audio in 2012 and created a complete biophysical laboratory in 2015. There are three screens in this room, at least a dozen speakers. One of the monitors showed a series of videos to the woman on the sofa, and the other two showed her reaction data in real time.
These data are all raw data, allowing the team to obtain information and process the data and inform them about how the media produces decisions, such as what scenes in the movie make the audience's heart beat faster, what scenes cause them to sweat, or make their cheeks feverish? What scene or plot makes them fall asleep?
Dolby was not the first technology company to use advanced sensors to understand how viewers interact with the media. For example, Netflix uses eye-tracking technology to decide on interface redesign decisions and finds that viewers are constantly forced to move their eyes back and forth between the title of a program and its description in the sidebar. Now that virtual reality headlines are becoming popular, technicians and researchers are collecting large amounts of data to observe how people react to media in more immersive environments.
